Grad Fest: Part 3

Ok back to graduation (yep there's lots more :)
Saturday morning, bright and early, was Convocation 
for the college of Humanities and Social Sciences.
This is the part where he walks across the stage and 
gets the 'diploma' (really they get the fancy case, the actual 
diplomas are mailed out later).

We decorated for the occasion.

 

Steven is the one sort of in the center, with the red 

and white around his neck.

 

 

He sat in the second row, so we could see him pretty well :)

We are so glad that so many people were able 

to make it to support Steven.

Happy Memorial Day!

Last year I resolved to make Memorial Day more meaningful than 
just another three day weekend.  Well, I kind of forgot about that 
until Friday.  However, since we weren't up in Salt Lake to visit
family graves we decided to go somewhere a little closer.
There is a pioneer cemetery in Silver Reef, about 30 minutes south of 
Cedar City, that Steven and I have visited a few times.

We picked up some pretty flowers and headed south.

 

The graves are so old, and a lot of them don't even have 

names, or the names have been rubbed off.

I kept thinking about the people who are buried there.

I have no idea who they were, or what they did, but I like to

wonder what their lives were like.  What did they do to further

the growth of southern Utah? What was their home life like?

Where did they come from?  What's their story?

It was neat, and it helped to make Memorial

Day more meaningful.

Then we drove to Red Cliffs

We'd considered camping there the night before, but

we got lazy and camped in our front room instead.

We probably wouldn't have found a campsite anyway, it

was super busy.

We hiked around looking for dinosaur tracks that I don't 

think really existed.  But we did see some old Anasazi ruins.

Plus, the landscape alone is worth the tiny entrance fee.

We've always seen this house from the freeway, 

so it was neat to actually find out what is was.

I think it's the last remaining home from what used

to be the settlement of Harrisburg.

 We drove by Quail Creek (which we'd never seen before), then 

into St. George for lunch, and took the back roads home to Cedar.

 It was a good day :)

Grad Fest:part two

I can't seem to get on track of things lately.

I can't believe May is practically over.  I think we were

looking forward to the beginning of the month for so long

that it feels like that is where we still are.

So, I'll try and catch up from there.

 

 Getting ready for Commencement ceremony.

Friday morning was the whole SUU graduating class Commencement.

This is the part with the many speeches and such.

 

 Out of a few tries this is the best picture we got (I'm really glad

 Cicily and my parents and brother were able to make the trip).

 I was determined to get a good seat on the side I was sure

he would walk in on, so we were there very early saving seats 

for everyone.

 And of course The Powells wouldn't miss it, and we are so 

happy about that :)  We really have been blessed with

great support from our families.

 Oh yeah, that perfect spot I mentioned? Completely on the

opposite side from where he walked in and sat.  I'm still 

kicking myself about that one.  Our seats would've been

perfect, had he walked in on our side.

Oh well, luckily the arena isn't that big so we could still see him.

 Where's Steven?

 I payed more attention to the speakers at his commencement 

than the ones at my own (except for one).  They actually weren't

extremely boring :)
